Erasmus+ project educates Young people about Biodiversity through WebToons

BioYouToon by Impact Grid (IG) e.V.

On the 26th of June 2024 Impact Grid organized a workshop in its premises in Adlershof to develop storylines for the Webtoon comics. Webtoons serve as the primary medium for communication and education within the BioYouToon project. This digital comic format is particularly effective in engaging young audiences, as it combines storytelling, art, and interactivity to convey complex ecological concepts in a visually engaging manner. The project leverages webtoons to:

• Simplify scientific information and make biodiversity conservation more relatable to youth.
• Encourage creativity and self-expression by allowing young people to co-create webtoon content based on real-world conservation challenges.
• Reach a wider audience through social media and digital platforms, making biodiversity education more accessible globally.
• Support educators and youth workers by providing digital storytelling tools to enhance their teaching methods. By integrating webtoons into the project’s educational framework, BioYouToon ensures that biodiversity awareness becomes more engaging, immersive, and memorable for young learners.

Key Strategies & Implementation

1. Education & Awareness: BioYouToon provides educators and youth workers with an innovative e-manual and Training Programmes, offering methodologies to integrate biodiversity conservation into education and community outreach.
2. Digital Innovation: BioYouToon includes an e-learning platform and incorporates digital comics and webtoons as powerful storytelling tools to engage young audiences in biodiversity conservation.
3. Community Engagement & Conservation Initiatives: Youth-led NGOs receive capacity-building support to implement impactful biodiversity conservation projects at the local level. Through joint activities, young people are encouraged to become ambassadors for biodiversity within their communities.

Youth as the Driving Force for Biodiversity Conservation

Young people are central to BioYouToon's mission. Their creativity, motivation, and leadership are key drivers for change in biodiversity conservation. The project empowers youth through leadership Development, Entrepreneurial Opportunities, Collaboration & Networking, Innovative Learning Methods, Hands-on Conservation Activities, Global Youth Movements.

Outcomes & Achievements

Since its inception, BioYouToon has made significant strides in raising biodiversity awareness and empowering young people to take action. Key achievements include:

• Development of the BioYouToon e-manual, a comprehensive guide for youth workers and educators, equipping them with tools to integrate biodiversity education into their teaching.
• Launch of an interactive e-learning platform, providing accessible digital training materials and fostering engagement in biodiversity conservation through webtoons.
• Creation of youth-driven webtoon series, illustrating real-world biodiversity challenges and inspiring audiences through engaging narratives.
• Implementation of community-led conservation projects, where young people actively participated in restoring habitats, monitoring local wildlife, and promoting sustainable practices.
