Meiningen City Council takes emergency power supply from Heliocentris into operation
The Meiningen City Council took the new emergency power supply based on the Nexa 1200 fuel cell system from Heliocentris Energy Solutions AG into operation earlier this week. This ensures the emergency power supply to the City Council’s entire administration IT for several hours.
The conventional uninterruptible power supply (UPS) with lead batteries which was used in the past was not capable of compensating long bridging periods. The City Council has now opted for an attractive, innovative solution to the problem. Thanks to hydrogen and fuel cell technology, low noise levels as well as extended back-up times are ensured.
The Heliocentris fuel cell system Nexa 1200 is used in Meiningen in a hybridised form with lithium-ion batteries. The Nexas are integrated in a cascaded form, which demonstrates the flexibility with which the Nexa 1200 can be used. A total of eight 1.2 kW systems were connected to create a total power of just under 10kW. This means that a new UPS solution is being used as an indoor application, a solution which demonstrates the cascaded fuel cell systems in connection with the UPS power electronics.
A special feature of the project is the installation of this innovative technology in Schloss Elisabethenburg, which is where the City Council has its headquarters. A historic building and ultra-modern technology are thus being brought into harmony. This also marks the taking into operation of one of the last systems as part of the industrial field test of the Nexa 1200.
The field test, which is being carried out between 2010 to 2012, is being supported by the German Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development as part of the National Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology Innovation Programme (NIP). NOW GmbH National Organisation for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology is in charge of coordinating the NIP.
