Digital film scanner: How space research benefits the film industry
In principle, films today are shot just as they were 50 years ago: on analog film material. Worldwide, more and more film reels are being stored in overflowing leasing and film archives. A solution was needed so that all this analog film material could be easily and efficiently digitized. The film scanner developed by DLR in association with Kinoton, a middle-sized German company, exactly provides this long awaited solution. Perfect digital reproductions are finally possible in high resolution color format. In addition, the system is equipped with a high performance scanning unit and a data warehouse. During the entire scanning process, the user friendly interface clearly displays a clear and precise record of the images being scanned. The technological basis for this innovation was created in Adlershof – the technology employed is derived from the stereo cameras developed by DLR and used in the Mars 96 Program.
