Creative comics against biodiversity loss
BioYouToon, an Erasmus+ project, aims to sensitise young people and raise awareness of biodiversity
The project consortium of BioYouToon, an EU-funded Erasmus+ project, met at the end of March 2025 to share the results developed during the funding period. The highlight was five Webtoon Comics, available online in five languages: English, German, Finnish, Turkish and Italian. They were produced alongside other learning resources by the project partners under the direction of Impact Grid, based in Adlershof. The comics are designed to sensitise young people to the impacts of biodiversity loss in an entertaining way.
The Webtoon contents:
1. Danny the Wool Carder Bee
This story follows Danny, a tiny yet determined female wool carder bee navigating the challenges of survival. With her distinctive yellow markings and feisty nature, Danny fiercely protects her territory while collecting plant fibres to build her nest. Through her adventures, readers gain insight into the vital role of pollinators in maintaining ecosystems, as well as the threats they face from habitat loss and climate change. By shedding light on the overlooked yet essential contributions of solitary bees, this comic encourages awareness and conservation efforts. The vibrant artwork brings the complex world of bees to life, immersing readers in their intricate behaviours and ecological importance.
2. The Mosquito Story
This webtoon challenges common perceptions of mosquitoes by presenting their ecological significance. While often seen as pests, mosquitoes play crucial roles in ecosystems as pollinators and as a food source for other wildlife. The story explores different mosquito species, some of which do not feed on blood, and discusses the potential consequences of eradicating them from an ecosystem. By illustrating the delicate balance of nature, the comic encourages a more nuanced understanding of biodiversity and species interdependence. Detailed close-ups and dynamic visuals enhance the storytelling, making complex biological concepts accessible and engaging.
3. The Biologists' Summer Home
Set in a secluded summer retreat, this comic follows a group of biologists conducting field research on local flora and fauna. Their journey showcases the meticulous nature of scientific inquiry, from data collection to analysing ecological trends. Through their experiences, readers gain a greater appreciation for biodiversity studies and the dedication required to document and protect ecosystems. The story also highlights human interaction with nature, emphasizing the importance of responsible environmental stewardship. A blend of realism and expressive illustrations immerse readers in the natural landscapes, reinforcing the beauty and complexity of ecological research.
4. The Plight of the Sea Turtles
This compelling narrative follows the life cycle of sea turtles, shedding light on the environmental challenges they face. From plastic pollution to artificial lighting disorienting hatchlings, the story illustrates the human-induced threats endangering these ancient marine creatures. By showcasing both the struggles and resilience of sea turtles, the comic underscores the urgent need for conservation initiatives. Readers are encouraged to take action, whether by reducing plastic waste, supporting habitat preservation, or advocating for policy changes. The striking visuals capture both the majesty of the ocean and the perils that sea turtles encounter, leaving a lasting impact on audiences.
5. Ela & Kayra & The Magic Drawer
In this imaginative tale, two young explorers, Ela and Kayra, discover a magical drawer that transports them to different ecosystems. From rainforests to coral reefs to the microscopic world of bacteria, they embark on educational adventures that reveal the diversity of life on Earth. The story introduces key concepts of sustainability, interconnectedness, and environmental responsibility, making it an engaging entry point for younger audiences. Playful and colourful illustrations enhance the sense of wonder, ensuring that the lessons on biodiversity remain both entertaining and thought-provoking.
Project purpose
In the project, it was demonstrated how creative storytelling can be a powerful tool for science communication and environmental education. By transforming complex ecological concepts into engaging narratives, biodiversity was made more relatable and accessible to a broad audience. The comics not only educate but also inspire action, encouraging readers to appreciate and protect the natural world. As biodiversity continues to face global challenges, innovative approaches like these play an important role in fostering awareness and advocating for conservation efforts.
The project also contributes to the Adlershof community by raising young people's awareness of a sensitive topic such as biodiversity through the innovative use of education techniques. It goes beyond conventional technologies such as e-learning and extends the scope to more engaging methods such as webtoons. As a next step, the project aims to expand its scope by utilising AI technologies through VR for a more immersive learning experience.
