Course on fluorescence microscopy in Singapore meets with great interest
The five day event gave participants an in-depth introduction to various fluorescence microscopy techniques and their application to the Life Sciences
From June 20 to 24, 2011 PicoQuant GmbH, EINST Technology Pte Ltd. and the Institute of Medical Biology Microscopy Unit (IMU) held a course on \"F-techniques: FCS, FCCS, FLCS, FRET, FLIM and FRAP\" in Singapore. 44 participants and 18 instructors gathered at the IMU, which is based in Biopolis, a research and development center for biomedical sciences in Singapore. Renowned international researchers from the fields of fluorescence spectroscopy and microscopy gave an in-depth introduction to the different F-techniques and their application to the Life Sciences.
The participants benefited from a compact and comprehensive course program. Lectures about F-techniques and superresolution microscopy in the morning where complemented by corresponding hands-on experiments on different instruments in the afternoon. The group of instructors included Martin Hof from the J. Heyrovsky Institute in the Czech Republic, Markus Sauer from the University of Würzburg, Germany and JB. Sibarita from the Bordeaux University, France.
It was the first course of this kind in Singapore organized by PicoQuant, EINST and the IMU. The event met with great interest by researchers in the Southeast Asian region. The organizers noticed a huge interest from the participants for training in fluorescence microscopy during the five day event. Even after the official scientific sessions, participants went on with questions and discussions on the subjects. The course was initiated by Sohail Ahmed, head of the IMU, who has been working with the instruments of PicoQuant for several years and who had noticed the lack of adequate offers in the Southeast Asian region.
With the organization of the fluorescence course in Singapore, PicoQuant strengthens its presence in Southeast Asia and intends to better serve the scientific community of fluorescence microscopy and spectroscopy in this region. As the course has been such a success, the German company already plans further similar events.
