Clever living in Berlin
Residential location Adlershof: unique concentration of sustainable living concepts
The urban residential quarter at the most important research and media location in the Berlin-Brandenburg region has continued to expand. As a residential location, Adlershof boasts a unique concentration of well-wrought, future-oriented and sustainable living concepts. Here, clever living is actually being practised, with plenty of options allowing for an almost ideal everyday life in all conceivable areas. Gastronomic establishments too have thrived at the location, being well-frequented – a sure indicator that the quarter is growing.
Adlershof’s typical mix of rental and owner occupied housing has enriched the science location. At all times, developers and builders have placed great importance on high efficiency standards. Accordingly, the environmentally friendly heat supply of Adlershof’s clever homes is provided by an integrated heating network. What then are the advantages residents may expect of these up-to-date housing standards?
Those who appreciate renewable energy will delight in the certified Newton project’s PlusEnergy houses using photovoltaics and solarthermics. Available for both owners and tenants, these sustainable buildings produce more energy than they consume. Similarly, the student village opened in autumn 2014 is setting new standards. A functional, communicative and unconventional environment, it was created to meet the needs and wishes of its young academic population, offering everything that strikes at the heart of a student’s desires, including a club room, a launderette, a car sharing scheme and even a daycare facility for children. No wonder all 386 rooms of this livable gem were occupied instantly.
Equally, the comforts designed for the later years in life have been taken into account: geared to senior tenants in particular, the “Future Living” project combines living comfort and technology with adequate architecture and cutting-edge technical equipment entering into an impressive symbiosis. Designed to ensure a comfortable and self-determined life, the so-called “Assisted Living” system combines home life quality with service provision and technology. Associated with the project, an exhibition and event centre offers a variety of information and advisory services. Moreover, “Charlotte am Campus”, two large bright buildings surrounded by a leafy environment and provided with gastronomic services by a small café, await occupancy as of next year.
The good news for those interested in owner occupied properties: you can choose from a variety of architectural concepts – as developed, for instance, by Baywobau and NCC Deutschland – and secure a dream home for yourself.
However, the standard-setting housing development in Adlershof has not been completed. More residential units will be added to the approximately 1,400 units currently being created between the Humboldt University campus and the landscape park. Here, an additional 340 apartments will be realised by a municipal housing association. On Rudower Chaussee, not far from Adlershof S-Bahn station, more “clever living” options will be created. Right on time, approximately 150 student apartments will have been completed at the “Medienfenster” by the beginning of the 2016 winter semester. Moreover, “Viva City Adlershof” will round off the single-family home neighbourhood at the landscape park while on Straße am Flugplatz, a social quarter will be developed including a care retirement home, a daycare facility for children, a variety of shopping facilites as well as approximately 120 co-operative apartments. There is yet further potential to be exploited on Straße am Flugplatz through development plan amendments.
