Science Management is an exciting, growing interdisciplinary field closely connected to today’s complex scientific structures and organizations. It primarily focuses on managing innovation processes, such as excellence clusters or research centers.
Our Future Talks Session in February will offer you a glimpse into this dynamic field from two unique perspectives: Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin. Gain insights into the various specializations within this versatile field, spanning both a university and a non-university research institution. Dr. Maria Abad Andrade and Dr. Lucero Cobos-Becerra will share their personal experiences, discussing how they successfully navigated careers in both research and science management at local, national, and international levels. Learn about the wide range of professional opportunities that arise in Science Management after completing a PhD and how to leverage them for your career.

Our two speakers are:
Dr. Maria Abad Andrade is a research advisor at the Research Service Center (Servicezentrum Forschung, SZF) of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. In 2019, she earned her PhD in social sciences, focusing on the intersection of law and politics, winning the Humboldt Prize for her dissertation. Her academic background includes studies in Düsseldorf, Istanbul, Princeton, and Berlin.
Over the course of her academic and doctoral training, Maria gained valuable experience working at a range of non-university research institutions and universities in Germany, Turkey, and the United States. These experiences fueled her passion for research management, particularly in guiding researchers through the process of securing funding for innovative ideas. Following a position at Leibniz University Hannover’s research service, she now advises researchers on national funding opportunities, including programs offered by German ministries and the German Research Foundation (DFG).
Dr. Lucero Cobos-Becerra is a Scientific Officer in the Energy and Information Department at Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin and is also the project coordinator for CARE-O-SENE. With over ten years of experience, Lucero specialises in strategy development and the conceptualisation and implementation of international research projects. Her current focus at HZB is on international projects related to renewable fuels, catalysis for H2 production, and CO2 conversion - Power-to-X.
Lucero has extensive expertise in managing international cooperation projects and collaborating with stakeholders from diverse backgrounds, including academia, industry, and politics. She has previously served as an international project leader for the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), where she focused on circular economy and sustainable production and consumption projects. Lucero holds a PhD in Environmental Engineering from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and has a background in Chemical Engineering.
